“This is by far the best time of my life”

John Mulaney talks about his wedding to Olivia Munn.

At a performance on Late Night with Seth Meyers On Monday, August 12, the comedian, 41, spoke about his nuptials to the actress for the first time, telling Meyers, 50, “I got married. It’s the best,” while smiling broadly and raising his hand to show off his wedding ring.

He then called out to his mother-in-law, Kim Schmid, who was sitting in the audience, “Hi, Mom!” When Meyers clarified that Kim is Munn’s mother, Mulaney explained, “I call her Mom now. Like you said, we got married, so … I call her Mom now.”

When asked how he felt about his new in-laws, Mulaney replied, “This is the best time of my life,” and said marrying Munn, 44, was “one of the most fun things I’ve ever done.”

“I’ve been in a lot of interesting situations. Marrying into a big Vietnamese family is one of the funniest things I’ve ever done,” he continued in a jokingly dry voice, drawing laughter from the audience. “But they’re the best, man.”

He then joked about his in-laws: “One of them will accompany you everywhere,” before explaining that they always “call him John Mulaney – full name. Always full name: ‘Olivia is here with John Mulaney.'”

The comedian then shared that Munn’s family isn’t afraid to be direct, which is a stark contrast to his own family. “My family is white, Caucasian… so we’re uptight about a lot of topics,” he explained. “Money, health, everything — almost everything is off-limits. The Luong family will talk about everything immediately when they meet you. ‘How much money do you have?’ ‘Why are you so skinny?'”

Mulaney and Munn were married last month in an intimate ceremony at a friend’s house in upstate New York, a source close to Mulaney told PEOPLE at the time. Their 2-year-old son, Malcolm, and a best man were the only relatives present at the ceremony. Sam Waterston, Munn’s co-star from The Newsroomin office.

PEOPLE first reported on the couple’s relationship in May 2021. In September of this year, Mulaney revealed during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers that he and Munn were expecting a baby together.

“In the spring, I went to Los Angeles and met a wonderful woman named Olivia and started a relationship with her,” he told Meyers at the time. “I entered into a really beautiful relationship with someone incredible. And we’re having a baby together. I was nervous about announcing the news.”

Their son Malcolm was born on November 24, 2021.

The news of Mulaney and Munn’s wedding came several months after the Love Wedding Repeat Star spoke publicly about her breast cancer diagnosis. Munn was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer in 2023 after tests revealed she had Luminal B, a rapidly progressing, aggressive cancer, in both breasts.

When she shared news of her health in an Instagram post on March 13, she praised Mulaney for his support during her difficult treatment journey.

“I am so grateful to my friends and family for loving me through it. I am so grateful to John for the nights he spent researching what each surgery and medication meant and what side effects and recovery I could expect,” she wrote. “For being there before each surgery and there when I woke up and for always putting framed photos of our little boy Malcolm out so he was the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes.”

Munn later told PEOPLE that having to deal with her cancer without Mulaney would have felt like “climbing an iceberg.”

“I don’t think he had a moment to himself between being an incredibly hands-on dad and driving back and forth to the hospital – taking Malcolm to the park, putting him down for a nap, driving to Cedars-Sinai, hanging out with me, going home, putting Malcolm to bed, coming back to me,” she said. “And he did it all with joy.”
