Appear celebrates its 20th anniversary with two major initiatives

Appear is accelerating its pace of innovation with two major new initiatives to be unveiled at IBC2024. The first is the launch of a flexible, open software platform that delivers powerful media processing for live production. The second is a solutions ecosystem that includes Appear’s own capabilities alongside other industry-leading solutions, enabling best-in-class workflows.

“2024 is the most innovative year in Appear’s 20-year history,” said Thomas Bostrøm Jørgensen, CEO of Appear. “Our first wave of innovation has brought the media industry the most flexible, powerful and functionally versatile hardware-based live production solutions. At IBC2024, we will complete the live media puzzle with a software platform that enables media companies to operate at the highest levels of quality and robustness, regardless of whether they choose hardware, on-premise software or the cloud. The parallel launch of our new solution offering will provide further technical, operational and commercial flexibility.”

In addition to these product launches, Appear will also be showcasing key features and functionality for its X-Platform, a flexible and high-density hardware solution. This includes the newly introduced 100G IP Gateway Switch Module for the X-Platform, which increases cost efficiency and sustainability through higher density and significantly increased media throughput.

When producing live event content, latency is critical. Appear has further optimized the latency of the X-Platform’s AVC and HEVC features, now delivering sub-100ms end-to-end delivery.

In addition, the new dual-density JPEG XS module enables Appear to deliver eight Full HD channels per module, making up to 96 Full HD JPEG XS channels available from a single 2U chassis. The new HEVC/AVC X Platform module, on the other hand, offers a significant increase in processing performance, combining encoding and decoding, and delivering new audio qualities with Dolby Atmos support and HDR/SDR conversion.

“Throughout Appear’s lifespan, private circuit connectivity has been pretty much the only choice for operators looking to connect the world’s most prestigious live events, initially via satellite and leased lines, but that is changing fast,” said Andy Rayner, CTO of Appear. “Thanks to increased accessibility of highly available ISP infrastructure and our own rollout of hardware-accelerated SRT delivery over higher quality internet connections in 2023, we are unveiling the next generation of Appear at IBC this year, introducing a software platform for live production of all levels and enabling operators to leverage our new portfolio of solutions. Both are important on their own, but together we believe we are building the live production workflows of the future.”

David Walker, VP of Pre-Sales at Appear, will also be attending SVG Europe’s Sport Production Summit on September 12th, speaking on the panel “Promoting Sustainability in European Live Sports Production.” For more information and to register for the Sport Production Summit, click here.
