San Antonio, TX, August 12, 2024 – (PR.com) – John R. Simpson, Sr., a U.S. Air Force veteran, has completed his new book, Just My Story: A Slave of Destiny: a heartfelt reflection on his remarkable life journey from Selma, Alabama, to a fulfilling retirement after nearly fifty years of dedicated service in two distinct careers.

Author John R. Simpson, Sr. grew up in Selma, Alabama during the tumultuous time of the civil rights movement and volunteered for the U.S. Air Force in the midst of the Vietnam War. After serving his country for twenty years, he separated from the military and enrolled in college to complete his education. The author graduated with honors from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. He continued his education and earned a master’s degree in middle management administration from Texas A&M, Kingsville. He taught all areas of the social sciences and eventually became a middle and high school principal. After serving as the director of education for several at-risk campuses of the San Antonio Independent School District, he retired in 2014 after over twenty years as an educator.

“After working for nearly fifty years of my life and finally retiring from two different careers, I sat at home and obsessed with wondering: What do I do now?” writes Simpson Sr.

“I watched a lot of TV shows every day. I knew I had to do something or I would be forgotten. As I thought about this, I thought about my life day by day. For some reason, I couldn’t believe that I had accomplished so much in my life and yet so little. I knew there was more to come.

“After stumbling upon some memories I thought were long forgotten, I just knew I had to put these thoughts on paper before they were forgotten again. Thus began three years of writing my life story, so much so that some publishers recommended that I write two books. The motivation for writing my life story was also the desire to leave my two children, five grandchildren, and now five great-grandchildren with not only my life story, but also that of our immediate ancestors. This book is my legacy in my own words, as I saw it, for them and others who may be interested in the story of a little boy from Selma, Alabama.”
