Maggie Haberman examines Trump’s helicopter story

New York Times political reporter Maggie Haberman Fact check of the former president Donald Trump’s false story on Thursday about a near-death experience on board a helicopter with Willie Brownthe former mayor of San Francisco and ex-boyfriend of the Vice President Kamala Harris.

The fabricated account was told during a press conference at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. When asked about Harris’ past relationship with Brown, Trump launched into a detailed account of the alleged “emergency landing” and even claimed that Brown had revealed “horrible things” about Harris during the ordeal.

Haberman, who regularly covers breaking news on Trump’s past and campaigns, called the former president out on X: “Trump’s story about a rough helicopter landing with Willie Brown was actually referring to (the former governor of California) Jerry Brownand there was no hard landing. Everything about the story was false, both men said.”

And far from a dangerous emergency landing, the flight was uneventful, said Governor Gavin Newsomwho was also on board.

In another post, Haberman added: “Three of Trump’s casino managers were killed in a helicopter crash in 1989. Trump later suggested he was supposed to have been present at the accident, a claim some associates have called untrue.”

The three men connected to the story struck back in a New York Times In an article on Friday, a spokesman for Jerry Brown said: “There was no emergency landing and no discussion about Kamala Harris.”

Newsom reportedly laughed at the former president’s story, remarking, “That’s complete nonsense.”

Willie Brown also categorically denied ever having flown in a helicopter with Trump, let alone being in a life-threatening situation: “You know me well enough to know that if I almost crashed in a helicopter with someone, you would have heard about it!”
