President Nelson celebrates 100th birthday with a speech

SALT LAKE CITY – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints plans to celebrate the 100th birthday of President Russell M. Nelson with a worldwide broadcast.

The focus of the program is an invitation that President Nelson extended in June on the occasion of his 100th birthday.

President Nelson recalled the story told in the Bible when Jesus left the Ninety-Nine to seek the one lost man and encouraged the members to reach out to that one.

President Nelson made a social media post to mark his 100th birthday, inviting members to prayerfully ask, “How many of you know someone who might be discouraged? Who might you need to reconcile with or ask for forgiveness from? Has a name been on your mind lately without you knowing exactly why?”

He encouraged members to share their own stories on social media as they followed his advice.

Belen Perez, a young Latter-day Saint from Chile, said she was excited to participate in the celebration and work with newly baptized Church members.

“It’s incredible. I don’t know any other man who is almost 100 years old and can do so many things,” Perez said.

The broadcast begins on Monday, September 9, at 4:00 p.m. The live broadcast will be translated into 18 different languages on the church’s YouTube channel.
