The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), in collaboration with prime contractor Bixby Electric, announced Monday, August 12, that it will begin installing a three-way traffic signal at the intersection of U.S. Highway 24 and Baylor Drive and DePaul Avenue in Buena Vista.

The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of October and could put an end to the jokes made by some (but by no means all) city residents about the ability to turn left in Buena Vista during the summer season.

The construction site is located just south of downtown and the project is data-driven.

“Recent studies have shown that traffic is increasing on US 24, particularly along Baylor Drive, which is predominantly residential,” said Julie Constan, CDOT’s Regional Transportation Director. “Buena Vista is an active community, with many pedestrians and bicycles crossing the highway here. It was determined that a new traffic signal intersection will create a safer environment and more efficient traffic flow for all modes of transportation and users on this stretch of highway.”

Project improvements include:

Three-way signal at US 24, DePaul Avenue and Baylor Drive
Micro-surfacing (application of new asphalt on the existing road surface) at the intersection entrances in each direction
New stripes and markings, including turning lanes and multimodal features for pedestrians and cyclists
Replacing old sidewalks with new walkways, ramps and other ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant features at the northwest and northeast corners of US 24 and Baylor Drive.
Improved pedestrian safety at zebra crossings
Reflective backplates to improve the visibility of traffic light heads, especially for night drivers and in poor visibility conditions such as severe weather

Impact on travel

  • Usual working hours are Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Motorists should expect a closure of the southbound right-turn lane from US 24 onto DePaul Avenue and occasional lane closures on US 24.
  • Schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions and available resources.
