MPT promotes John F. Flanagan to academic director

America’s largest private maritime school, Maritime Professional Training (MPT), has promoted longtime executive director John F. Flanagan to academic director. In his new role, Flanagan will provide overall academic leadership for all of MPT’s programs, from curriculum development and compliance to faculty training and academic operations.

“John brings his years of experience in professional training and development to this new role,” said Lisa Morley, Executive Vice President at MPT. “I am confident he will be instrumental to future growth and innovation at MPT. We are very pleased to have him take on this important role.”

Flanagan has been with MPT for over 10 years and has held a number of administrative and leadership roles, including Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, and regularly helps professional sailors navigate complex training regulations and advance their career goals.

Prior to MPT, Flanagan served as an officer aboard the training ship SUNY Maritime Empire State VIand worked for the Overseas Shipholding Group aboard an unlimited tonnage product tanker. In 2012, he was awarded the United States Merchant Marine Medal for his participation in the government relief efforts following Hurricane Sandy on the East Coast.

Outside of work, Flanagan has been active in Marine Industries of South Florida for seven years, helping high school students improve their business and public speaking skills through the group’s annual Elevator Pitch competition. He also coaches his daughter’s softball team and plans to volunteer with his two young sons as well.

“These activities reflect my overall commitment to nurturing relationships and community ties, both enriching my family life and making a positive contribution to the community around me,” Flanagan said.

Flanagan holds a valid 1600-ton Captain’s License as well as a BS in Marine Transportation and an MS in International Transportation Management from SUNY Maritime.
