The minimalist style of the Nissan Camper Van compensates for missing features

Make way, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen. Nissan is the latest automaker to add a camper van to its lineup.

The Japanese brand has just unveiled the series production of My Room, a vehicle it first unveiled as a concept in 2022 and briefly sold as a limited “launch edition” last year, according to New Atlas. And thanks to a wood-paneled interior and a versatile Murphy bed, the new model could be the company’s most attractive van yet.

The My Room isn’t the first campervan – or “caravan” as Nissan calls it – but it really stands out from its competitors. That’s because the vehicle doesn’t try to be everything to everyone, unlike many other fully-equipped campervans today. While the My Room lacks a kitchen and bathroom, it has a stylish, minimalist design and everything you need for a trip to the beach.

The exterior of the My Room may be rather utilitarian, but its cabin is beautiful. Said to be inspired by the design of hotel rooms, the space features a clean look with wood grain on the floor, walls and ceiling. The room is separated from the van’s cockpit by a retractable curtain, and a bank of windows with wooden blinds give the space an airy feel. There’s a swiveling multi-purpose bench in the second row that can be rotated to face the front or back of the vehicle, as well as a full-length sliding table that can be used to transform the room into a work area. Rounding it all out is the fold-down Murphy bed, should you plan on staying overnight at your destination.

That’s about it as far as features go, but for someone looking for a vehicle to take on a short, no-fuss camping trip, it should be more than adequate. And while there are no built-in appliances or features, there is plenty of room for stowable portable appliances should you want to take a kitchenette with you on the road. There’s also a portable battery station to keep any appliances you bring running.

Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, there’s a catch. You can’t currently buy My Room in the U.S. According to New Atlas, it’s set to go on sale in Japan this month. It will be available with either two- or four-wheel drive, and there will be several trim levels to choose from at launch. Prices start at ¥5,516,500, or about $37,500.
