Cardinals could demote Slugger to make room for Phenom, insider says

The St. Louis Cardinals need to do something now.

St. Louis is battling for a wildcard spot in the National League, but has not performed as well as hoped since Major League Baseball’s transfer deadline in 2024.

Young hitter Nolan Gorman has not performed as expected this season, said Benjamin Hochman of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

“With runners in scoring position, the Cards have the second-worst OPS in Major League Baseball (only the White Sox are worse),” Hochman said. “The Cards are tied for the fourth-most runners left on base. And they’re 21st in runs scored. Their offense is average anyway — so it’s even more painful that in the moments when some offense does come, runs often don’t come. OK, can Jordan Walker help? At this point, it wouldn’t hurt to see that. I’d say give him a call…

“The Cardinals, of course, have trouble hitting left-handed pitchers. Outfielder Walker is right-handed. And outfielder Nootbaar, although left-handed, hasn’t hit much lately. Maybe this promotion will mean the end of Brandon Crawford? Or possibly a demotion of Nolan Gorman (though, as noted in a recent column, even with some weaknesses, his bat is still dangerous when used off the bench). Regardless of who moves, the Cards should move.”

Walker is the Cardinals’ top prospect and had a solid rookie year but was demoted early this season. He’s looking better in the minor leagues, so why not give him a chance at this point?
