The Perseids, considered the best meteor shower of the year, reached their peak activity on Sunday evening. Some of them even had the opportunity to observe the Northern Lights at the same time.

The Perseids, considered by astronomers to be the most beautiful meteor shower of the year, reached their peak activity on Sunday evening.

Meteors streaking across the night sky provided an impressive spectacle for skywatchers around the world, and some of them may even have been able to catch a rare glimpse of the stunning Northern Lights at the same time.

The Perseid meteors are active from July to September each year, but activity peaks in mid-August. If you missed the show on Sunday night, don’t worry: According to the American Meteor Society, the Perseid meteor shower is also expected to peak on Monday night.

In the meantime, check out these photos taken over the weekend of meteors passing by in the U.S. and around the world. Some even include the famous aurora borealis in the background.
