Big D Weekly – August 12: The big breakthrough continues for FC Dallas

Well, we’ve made it a week without any FC Dallas games. How about another one? Yes, we’ll have to do it again this week as the club is off during the Leagues Cup break. The team will continue to train this week in preparation for their game in DC later this month.

Aside from the waiting game we’re in, there’s not much happening at the club in general. The summer transfer window closes later this week, and FC Dallas seem content to stick with what they have. I’ve argued in the past that they’ll claim that the likes of Geovane Jesus and Alan Velasco returning from long injuries could feel like new players. If they add Asier Illarramendi and Jesus Ferreira to the team, they could be right in that line of thinking.

We don’t know if all four of the players mentioned will be back to top form on August 24. I still believe that Geo Jesus and Velasco will take some time to get back to match fitness, which could be risky for FC Dallas’ playoff chances.

Until then, let’s cover some things you may have missed last week.

Programming note: With FC Dallas currently on a couple of weeks off, things might be a little quieter here than usual. I might do another Q&A this week, as last week was a lot of fun and there were some really good questions from all of you. If there are any topics you’d like to see discussed at this time, let me know in the comments or DM me here on SubStack.

Leagues Cup reaches further knockout rounds

The Leagues Cup reaches the round of 16 this week, with some big clashes like Seattle in search of revenge against Pumas after they destroyed LA. St. Louis continues to perform well in the Leagues Cup, beat Portland in the last round and will now face Club America in a repeat of last year’s group stage. Colorado beats Juarez to also get into the next round. Orlando was eliminated in a penalty shootout against Cruz Azul.

The complete bracket currently looks like this:

I’m still putting my money on a semi-final between LAFC and Club America on one side and a semi-final between Columbus and Cruz Azul on the other.

Transfers and trades round off the summer transfer window

The summer transfer window in the MLS is coming to an end this week and there have been a lot of transfers in the last few days. Charlotte landed a big USMNT signing in Tim Ream. Minnesota traded Caden Clark to Montreal. Toronto also signed a contract with Montreal, Send Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty to her rivals. RSL shows that they all set for 2024 with their latest DP addition. Elsewhere, our old buddy Lucas Bartlett signed a contract extension in DC. New York City FC has loaned striker Talles Magno to Brazilian first division club Corinthians until June 2025.
