Shortlists for the Ned Kelly Awards 2024 announced

The Australian Crime Writers Association has announced the shortlists for the 2024 Ned Kelly Awards.

The shortlisted works in each category are:

Best crime novels

  • Killer, traitor, spy (Tim Ayliffe, S&S)
  • Pick-up artist (Shelley Burr, Hachette)
  • Dark corners (Megan Goldin, Michael Joseph)
  • The Seven (Chris Hammer, A&U)
  • The Tea Ladies (Amanda Hampson, Penguin)
  • Darling, girl (Sally Hepworth, Macmillan)
  • Dark mode (Ashley Kalagian Blunt, Ultimo)
  • Everyone on this train is suspect (Benjamin Stevenson, Michael Joseph)

Best international crime fiction

  • Dice (Claire Baylis, A&U)
  • The only suspect (Louise Candlish, S&S)
  • Birnam Wood (Eleanor Catton, Granta)
  • Resurrection Walk (Michael Connelly, A&U)
  • The search team (Hannah Richell, S&S)
  • Zero days (Ruth Ware, S&S)

The best true crime

  • The Homicide Squad (Michael Adams, Affirm)
  • Reckless (Marele Day, Ultimo)
  • Killing for the Fatherland (David Marr, Black Inc.)
  • Crossing the border (Nick McKenzie, Hachette)
  • The teacher’s favorite (Hedley Thomas, Macmillan)

Best Crime Debut

  • Violet Kelly and the Jade Owl (Fiona Britton, A&U)
  • Low bridge (Lucy Campbell, Ultimo)
  • Murder in the Pacific: Ifira Point (Matt Francis, Big Sky)
  • Four dogs missing (Rhys Gard, Echo)

The Ned Kelly Awards have been presented since 1995, making them Australia’s oldest awards for crime fiction and true crime.

The 2024 winners will be announced in September.
