IndiGo Airlines introduces new seat selection feature for female travellers

IndiGo Airlines now offers female passengers the option to sit next to other women, offering a new level of comfort and privacy during the flight.

Airlines have been innovating to improve passenger comfort, including extra legroom, sleeper cabins for economy travelers on Air New Zealand and bookable armrests on Frontier Airlines. Now there’s a new feature on IndiGo Airlines, India’s largest low-cost carrier: Female passengers can choose to sit next to other women.

IndiGo recently started a trial run of allowing this option during seat selection at the time of booking. Women who have already reserved a seat are marked with a colour code, usually pink, to make it easier for other female passengers to select a seat next to them. This option is exclusive to women, meaning men booking a seat will not see this information and hence will not be able to use it to get in touch. CNN highlighted this feature, quoting IndiGo’s statement that it aims to “enhance the travel experience for our female passengers”. The initiative is part of IndiGo’s broader #GirlPower campaign, which works towards women empowerment.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8, IndiGo proudly announced that the company has one of the highest proportion of female pilots in the world.

This initiative is currently in the test phase and is not entirely unexpected in India, where women-only compartments are already in place on trains and buses to ensure their comfort. Similar measures are being taken elsewhere, such as in Slovakia, where the state-run railway company recently introduced women-only compartments on certain trains. – AFP
