Tokyo:

A runway at Japan’s Narita airport had to be temporarily closed on Monday following reports that white smoke was rising from a Singapore Airlines plane landing, authorities said. However, emergency services found no signs of fire and no one was injured.

Six fire engines and two ambulances rushed to the scene because of the smoke. Narita Airport’s runway B was closed from about 7:40 a.m. (22:40 GMT), shortly after the flight landed at the Tokyo gateway, airport and fire department officials said.

“We received a report that white smoke was coming from the left engine,” a Narita city fire official told AFP.

However, there were no signs of fire and no one was injured, she said, adding that firefighters left the scene after observing the plane for more than an hour.

There were 276 passengers and crew on board the plane, local media reported.

An airport official told AFP that the plane only reported the smoke to the airport after landing.

“It was reported that there was a possibility that there was a problem during landing,” a spokesman for Narita International Airport told AFP.

Tire fragments were found on the runway, the spokesman said. There was no further information about the incident.
