It’s no secret that Google Photos is getting some upgrades for video content – in early August 2024, we reported on a series of updates planned for the popular cloud storage app for photos.
Code hidden in the update suggests that video editing will become much easier and includes an improved user interface and an option to increase/decrease speed.
Thanks to a breakdown by Android Authority, we now have an even better idea of what to expect from Google Photos’ improved video editor.
Video editing in Google Photos
While it’s not technically a video editing app, the ability to crop video content in Google Photos is nothing new – but it’s fair to say that the design and functionality are pretty basic. According to the analysis of version 6.97 of the Android app, users can expect a much better experience with more useful tools.
Originally known as Spotlights, the new editing tools have been renamed Presets and offer four main functions available.
Basic cut allows you to trim highlights of a video and improve the color
Slowmo adds slow motion to parts of a video.
rail tracks and zooms on video subjects.
zoom increases or decreases the magnification of an area.
These options can be found when you select a video and tap “Edit.” From here, users need to scroll down to the “Preset” option – which isn’t available in the current version of the app. Android Authority explained that with the new tools, effects and duration are controlled via a simple slider.
So we don’t expect anywhere near the level of control we find in the best video editing software we’ve tested – this isn’t a CapCut alternative, and certainly not a replacement for Premiere Pro. But it could turn out to be one of the best video editing software for beginners and content creators who need to cut clips quickly. We just hope Google announces a release date soon.
