DePaul and Pope John begin their 2024 high school season with a duel on Friday night in Wayne.

Both teams are listed in the New Jersey Super 25 preseason rankings, with the host Spartans entering at No. 5 and the Lions at No. 16.

This is an important game in the United White Division of the Super Football Conference and will also have implications for the Non-Public B rankings, as Pope John was placed alongside DePaul in the classifications released Monday.

Pope John defeated DePaul 31-27 last year, also played in Wayne. DePaul reached the Non-Public B state finals, while Pope John lost in the first round of the Non-Public A playoffs.

Junior Derek Zammit, ranked as the third-best recruit in the class of 2026 in New Jersey by 247Sports, leads DePaul’s offense.

He has two top-tier targets to throw to: Ohio State-committed De’Zie Jones and Notre Dame-committed Elijah Burress, whose father Plaxico played 12 seasons in the NFL, including with the Jets and Giants. Jones and Burress are ranked by 247Sports as the No. 7 and 13 recruits, respectively, in New Jersey’s class of 2025.

The DePaul offense also includes running back Nolan James, an uncommitted senior who was ranked by 247Sports as the No. 33 recruit in New Jersey’s class of 2025. James and Zammit both made the preseason All-New Jersey team.

DePaul’s defense includes DeShawn Stewart, who has committed to Ohio State and is ranked as New Jersey’s No. 15 recruit in the class of 2025 by 247Sports.

Pope John’s star player is linebacker Tyler Houser, who has committed to Wake Forest.

Houser is ranked as New Jersey’s No. 18 recruit in the class of 2025 by 247Sports and made the preseason All-New Jersey team.
