The Art of the Macabre: Creating Halloween Masks from Paper Mache (ages 18 and over)

The program runs on two Saturdays: 28 September and 5 October, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Get in the Halloween spirit by crafting a one-of-a-kind creature mask in our two-part, immersive paper mache workshop. Join Portland-based visual strategist, illustrator, and teaching artist Fry for a workshop that celebrates storytelling, personal creativity, and artistic expression. This hands-on experience is designed to inspire and guide you to craft a mask that is uniquely you, while fostering a collaborative community atmosphere.

Highlights of the workshop:

  • Session 1: Foundations and Construction
    • Start with a comprehensive introduction to the basics of papier-mâché, including how to prepare different types of paste and how to prepare and apply paper strips to achieve optimal adhesion and a smooth finish.
    • Learn how to build scaffolding from everyday materials like balloons, cardboard and wire to create the foundation for your mask.
    • Discover techniques for sculpting distinctive facial features using materials such as clay, cardboard or rolled paper, and master the art of blending and smoothing layers for a seamless finish.
  • Session 2: Painting and finishing touches
    • Bring your mask to life by applying base coats and layers of paint to create depth, shading and highlights, and add realism and character by using acrylic paint and touch-up pens.
    • Add a personal touch to your creation by adding finishing touches with materials such as fabric, feathers and beads to ensure your mask is as unique as your creative vision.

Throughout the workshop, you will be encouraged to share ideas and inspiration with other participants and improve your project through constructive feedback in a supportive environment.

Why attend? This workshop is an opportunity to experiment with new techniques and inject new energy into your creative work. It is also a chance to connect with like-minded people and have fun making paper mache crafts.

Workshops are for ages 18 and older and limited to 15 participants regardless of skill level. Participants are asked to bring a snack and personal art supplies to inspire their creativity.
