The University of New Mexico Maxwell Museum of Anthropology is in the midst of its annual student membership drive, where it is giving away free memberships to the first 75 UNM or CNM students who sign up in person at the Museum Store before Friday, August 30. To encourage this membership drive, the Maxwell is hosting a student pizza party in its courtyard on Friday, August 30, from 6-7 p.m. The venue is located west of Duck Pond and behind the UNM Alumni Chapel.
The free event includes gluten-free options and refreshments while supplies last. Registration through the Eventbrite page is recommended but not required.
After the student-only dinner, the Maxwell welcomes Erica Ortegon, aka DJ La Ruda, to spin classic SKA, rocksteady, reggae, dancehall and Xicano oldies at the popular Museum Dance Party: Back to School Edition. The event is in partnership with community organization Headphone Dance Party, led by KUNM team member Brandon Kennedy. Over 100 wireless headphones are available for attendees to dance the night away in a cultural space transformed by vibrant and colorful lights.
The event on Friday, August 30th, from 7-9 p.m., is free and open to all. Registration via the Eventbrite page is not required, but is helpful so that attendees can suggest dance songs for the shared music playlist.
Julián Antonio Carrillo, Curator of Public Programs at the Maxwell Museum, said, “As we prepare for a great fall semester at the Museum with free workshops, new exhibitions, field trips, a first board game night and more, we want to welcome our students and the community to our space and cultural programming. This kick-off event is designed to bring people together, and what better way to do that than food, music, dancing and good vibes.”
