Giant soap bubbles illuminate The Weidner for an immersive outdoor “art-architecture” exhibition

GREEN BAY (WLUK) — A large outdoor bubble exhibit is coming to Green Bay.

The installation, titled “Evanescent,” will be on display in front of the Weidner from August 28 to September 15. Thanks to the support of the City of Green Bay and the 1923 Fund, it is open to visitors free of charge day and night.

Evanescent was designed by Australian studio Atelier Susi, which works at the intersection of art and architecture and creates “art-architecture” in public spaces. The pop-up display has travelled all over the world.

Lindsay Glatz, an installation representative for Evanescent, said the exhibit promotes fun and community interaction.

“There are three giant soap bubbles that are interactive. You can play in them, have fun and walk through them,” explains Glatz.

The bubbles, which are more than 20 feet tall, are made of a color-reflective dichroic film that reacts to the changing light of the sun as it moves across the sky, creating a rainbow of reflections on the ground and offering unique photographs from every angle.

The lighting of the sculpture ensures that its beauty is preserved even after sunset.

“The magic of the bubbles is that they are iridescent during the day, catching the light of the sun, but they also glow at night. So this installation is definitely worth seeing during the day and at night to experience the full effect while it’s in the city,” added Glatz.

By recreating the ethereal quality and magic of bubbles, Atelier Sisu’s Evanescent speaks to our universal playfulness and childlike curiosity. The work encourages the audience to consider the world around them as a space of impermanence and fragility, like that of a bubble.

Evanescent’s opening day at UW-Green Bay coincides with the start of a free, three-week concert series on Weidner’s Patio Stage featuring local musicians.

It will also be on display at the second annual Estamos Aqui Festival Hispano – a free, open-air festival of Hispanic arts and culture on the UWGB campus – taking place from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sept. 14. Last year’s inaugural event drew over 8,000 people.

This is how Atelier Susi describes Evanescent:

Evanescent is an adjective that describes the quality of being fleeting or quickly disappearing, of transience.

The artwork was inspired during the Covid-19 pandemic, when the world came to a standstill and everything we took for granted began to disappear. Atelier Sisu strove to convey this sense of ephemeral beauty and the need to live in the moment through the idea of the bubble.

This art architecture connects the audience with their surroundings and is designed to be truly inclusive. By recreating the ethereal quality and magic of bubbles, Atelier Sisu’s Evanescent speaks to our universal playfulness and childlike wonder. The work encourages the audience to consider the world around them as a space of impermanence and fragility, like that of a bubble.
