Nicholas John Aloes Jr.

SOUTH PORTLAND – On August 18, 2024, Nicholas John “NJ” Aloes Jr. committed suicide.

NJ was born to Nick and Mindy on December 13, 2009. NJ came into the world hungry and determined. He was a force to be reckoned with. NJ was beautiful inside and out. His striking blue-green eyes and charming grin made everyone melt.

NJ was the second of four sons. He was only 13 months younger than his brother Adam, and they learned everything together. They were brothers, teammates, and best friends. When Chase was born, NJ became the gentlest and most protective big brother. When Jules came into the world, NJ doted on him and did anything to make Jules laugh. NJ was always willing to help his brothers, whether it was practicing football plays with Adam, giving Chase advice on his stance in the batting cage, or carrying Jules when his legs were too tired.

NJ’s bond with his father, Nick, was unbreakable. They shared a drive to work hard, never give up and achieve goals. Their love for baseball was unmatched. Whether as “dad” or “coach,” Nick guided NJ with patience and love, learning and growing together.

Nobody made his mother Mindy laugh like NJ did, and she did everything she could to make him smile. NJ was always the loudest fan on the sidelines, stealing glances at Mindy during the big moments to make sure she was there.

NJ loved his grandma and grandpa. He hugged his grandma tightly. He played guitar with his grandpa and mastered each lesson at an amazing pace.

NJ loved his friends. He loved making people smile. He wanted everyone to feel included and welcome.

NJ was friendly to everyone. He was the first to jump up when someone was carrying something heavy. He wanted to help. And he wanted to learn. NJ was determined to master any activity that interested him. He never gave up.

We will miss NJ every minute of every day. We wish more than anything that we had more time with him. We will treasure his memories forever.

NJ leaves behind his brothers Adam, Chase and Jules Aloes, his parents Mindy and Nick Aloes, his Grandma and Grandpa Mike and Jane Afthim, all of South Portland, his Papou and YiaYia, Chuck and Elaine Aloes of Solon and many more aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Visitation hours to honor NJ’s life will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 29, at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Relatives and friends may dress casually if desired. A private burial will be held at a later date.
