Worcester Public Library celebrates community at street festival

WORCESTER, Massachusetts – Saturday afternoon was an afternoon of free activities, entertainment and games down in Salem Square as the Worcester Public Library celebrated its annual street festival for the community.

The city has closed some surrounding streets for the event. The party comes less than two days after a library employee was attacked with a skateboard that led to the closure of the library’s branches on Friday. A 31-year-old Worcester man was arrested and charged following the incident.

Library executive director Jason Homer says after an incident like this, the community needs to come together strong and united.

“We’re so thrilled that so many members of our community are here supporting us,” Homer said. “We have a reception table full of flowers from random people from all over the community. Lots of letters. And we really want to thank Worcester for their response to our, you know, rough day on Thursday. And for us, we’re just so thrilled that the community cares about us the way we care about them. And that’s been the best part of this whole experience. I’m really excited. Today feels very cathartic.”

Homer says the street fair has gotten bigger each year it has been held and hopes that trend continues. He says the library’s goal is ultimately to change the community for the better.
