The SEC announced Friday that it will sponsor rowing as the conference’s 22nd sport and 13th women’s sport. The announcement means Alabama will no longer compete in rowing as a Big 12 program, but will instead join the Crimson Tide athletic programs in the Southeastern Conference.

“By adding Oklahoma and Texas, we have the opportunity to add another conference sport and provide a new group of SEC student-athletes with the championship experience. We look forward to continuing to grow rowing in the SEC,” said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey.

Alabama will compete against Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas in the league’s inaugural season. The site of the SEC Rowing Championship has not yet been determined, but will be held in May 2025.

“This is something every rower in Alabama has dreamed of since the beginning of our program. I’m so excited for our student-athletes,” said Alabama head coach Glenn Putyrae. “Every athlete in Alabama trains to compete and win an SEC championship. Our rowers now have that opportunity and I know they’re excited about it.”

The Crimson Tide have competed as a Big 12 program since 2014 and finished the 2023-24 season ranked 19th in the latest CRCA Coaches Poll.
