What does “Mike’s Way” mean at Jersey Mike’s?

The popular sandwich chain Jersey Mike’s offers a wide variety of sandwiches and sides, but it is best known for its special “Mike’s Way” preparation. “Mike’s Way” is a simple, hearty combination of classic sandwich toppings with dressings and condiments. When you order a “Mike’s Way” sandwich from Jersey Mike’s, in addition to the base meat and cheese of the chosen sandwich, it is prepared with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, salt, oregano and a special blend of olive oil and red wine vinegar.

The “Mike’s Way” topping combination became popular thanks to the real Jersey Mike. Michael Ingravallo opened the first Mike’s Subs store in Point Pleasant, NJ in 1956. In the ’50s, the submarine sandwich was still a unique concept, so Ingravallo used the novelty of the sub to build a thriving dining destination. “Mike’s Way” was the cornerstone of Mike’s Subs sandwich toppings from the beginning. The company name was changed to Jersey Mike’s after the first franchises were launched in 1987, as a tribute to Michael and the NJ location where it all began.

Go beyond “Mike’s Way” with these Jersey Mike’s toppings

In recent years, #FoodTok hackers and intrepid fast-food adventurers have continued to expand on “Mike’s Way,” adding new flavors to their signature Jersey Mike’s orders. TikTok user @allyvhenderson went viral in 2023 by taking the turkey provolone sandwich (look for No. 7 on the menu) and jazzing it up “Mike’s Way” by adding mayonnaise, pickles, and cherry pepper relish to the mix, served on rosemary parmesan bread. Change that No. 7 to a No. 13, swap out 2023’s pickle topping for banana peppers, and you end up with user @allyloru’s updated 2024 version (Does the name “Ally” somehow give a Jersey Mike’s upgrade powers?).

Meanwhile, Reddit user @TpMeNUGGET has helpfully listed all the additional sauces and toppings that may not be on Jersey Mike’s online menu, including Frank’s Red Hot Sauce, blue cheese, and chipotle mayonnaise. He recommends that enterprising customers ask for “grilled mayonnaise,” which means spreading mayonnaise on one half of the sandwich bread and grilling the bread mayonnaise side down. Guests can also ask for the sandwich meat to be “cooked” in one of Jersey Mike’s sauces.

Whether you do it the classic “Mike’s Way” or mix it up with even more toppings, Jersey Mike’s has a sandwich for every taste. Maybe one day we’ll even learn what Danny Devito, the famous Jersey Mike’s advertiser, likes to order.
