There could be trouble in the England dressing room as a report claimed that Andrew Flintoff will not be part of the national team’s coaching staff for the white-ball series against Australia. The Telegraph report added that stand-in coach Marcus Trescothick will be given the opportunity to select his own coaching team. It further said that the decision was taken because Flintoff did not “click” with England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler during the 2024 T20 World Cup. On the other hand, Buttler has a close relationship with Trescothick as both played together at Somerset. In recent years, Buttler has also worked with Trescothick to improve his batting technique.

Flintoff was part of the England coaching staff during the 2023 tour to the West Indies and was assistant coach at the T20 World Cup. With his time with the England national team now coming to an end, he is expected to enter a new phase of his coaching career.

Flintoff coached the Northern Superchargers at The Hundred this year. Under his leadership, the team won five games and lost two. Although they narrowly missed the playoffs, it was still an impressive start to Flintoff’s coaching career.

Meanwhile, Trescothick did not rule out taking on the job as England head coach full-time in the future.

“I’m definitely looking forward to the opportunity,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward to this job. We’ll work it out a bit more from there. “It wasn’t something I’d ever thought about before until I got this opportunity. I’m not necessarily thinking beyond the end of the Australia series. I’ve been very focused on the work we’re doing here.”

“I’m here for a period of time and then I’m preparing for the white-ball series. I’m just trying to have different conversations behind the scenes with coaches, staff and the like to make sure we get it right,” he added.
