Local authorities see rising enthusiasm for election results as Harris wins

Nelson repeatedly took the microphone between DNC speakers to remind voters of the problems facing the legislative elections, telling WHYY News that the months leading up to the election will be a grind.

“We’re waiting to exhale. We really, really are. We’re cheering loudly, but we’re waiting to exhale,” Nelson said.

State Rep. Greg Scott, who also represents part of Montgomery County, kicked off the evening with Nelson. It was his fourth stop of the evening.

“Everywhere I go, people are excited,” Scott said. “They’re excited because we have a vision of hope, a vision that moves our country forward, and the contrast couldn’t be (greater).”

Scott repeated the slogan: Montgomery County is the key to the Keystone – meaning that any statewide candidate seeking to win Pennsylvania must excite voters in a county with a population of more than 860,000.

He said Harris succeeded in spreading that mantra after President Joe Biden’s widely criticized debate night.

“A few weeks ago, things were looking pretty bleak after that debate performance, but today I can report that we are not only excited because we have a new nominee, but we have a wide range of nominees on the bench who are ready to show up, perform and work,” Scott said.

According to the latest NPR/PBS News/Marist poll, Harris is ahead of Trump by 3%. Polls from FiveThirtyEight show Harris ahead of Trump by about 2% in Pennsylvania.

“But if this is a ‘vibes’ election, if the vibe of Kamala comes through saying, ‘It’s OK, we did it’ – then all the excitement that’s going on now will go to a whole new level,” Nelson said.
