SoFi Stadium bans music stages in elevated American Airlines Plaza

More than 100 noise complaints about last weekend’s HARD Summer Festival outside SoFi Stadium in Inglewood have led to a ban on future music events at the venue’s elevated American Airlines Plaza.

Inglewood Mayor James Butts said in a statement that the raised stage on the square had been identified as a “major factor in the problem” of noise complaints.

“As a result, stages will no longer be permitted at future events in this area,” Butts said in his statement.

The HARD Summer Festival included four outdoor music stages outside the SoFi Stadium in the surrounding parking lots.

Butts said the city was “baffled” by the complaints, as many outdoor concerts had previously taken place on the square without incident. The city government worked with festival organizers between Saturday and Sunday to fix the problem, which was mainly focused on certain “bass frequencies.”

“Looking ahead, and with the lessons learned from last weekend, we are prepared to better monitor and oversee future event organizers to minimize the impact of noise and vibration on residents outside the venue,” Butts said.

El Segundo police said on X that they had received several calls about noise coming from the HARD Summer 2024 festival in Hollywood Park. The lineup included electronic, house, techno, dubstep, drum and bass and hip-hop across five stages. It was later revealed that more than 100 noise complaints had been received from El Segundo and other South Bay communities.

Artists performing at the festival included Nelly Furtado, Sofi Tukker, Disclosure, Bunt, Camden Cox, Oppidan, Sosa and Teko.

“We are aware of the loud booming noise in the city,” El Segundo department officials wrote last weekend. “It is coming from a music festival near SoFi Stadium scheduled to take place today and tomorrow from 2:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. There is no need to call 911 to report it.”

The annual festival was scheduled for last Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. It took place for the first time in Hollywood Park next to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. Up to 70,000 visitors were expected each day.

The show has previously been held at the Shrine Exposition Hall, the Forum (now Kia Forum), Los Angeles State Historic Park, Whittier Narrows Recreation Area in El Monte and the Fairplex in Pomona.
