ORLANDO, Florida. – Thousands of students in Central Florida are returning to school, but many still lack school supplies.

That’s why News 6 and A Gift For Teaching are teaming up Thursday to conduct a phone drive and collect donations to help provide free school supplies to teachers and students in Orange and Osceola counties.

News 6’s Ezzy Castro spoke with Angela Garcia, Vice President of Development and Marketing at A Gift For Teaching.

“Every dollar donated today can purchase up to $20 worth of school supplies, as generous donors have pledged to match today,” Garcia said.

BFARR Contracting has also partnered with A Gift For Teaching to provide students with the tools they need.

Last year, News 6’s on-air telethon event raised over $61,000.

“More than 70% of the schools here in Central Florida are considered high-needs schools, and you can imagine that hundreds of thousands of students are affected,” Garcia said.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Donate: For every dollar received, A Gift For Teaching can donate up to $10 worth of teaching materials to teachers and their students. However, on Thursday, August 22, when WKMG will host an on-air telethon event from noon to 7 p.m., each donation can be matched to provide twice as much material for teachers and students.
