Notre Dame football and a Texas school are reportedly on the Big Ten’s wish list

As much as we want to pretend it isn’t true, it feels like Notre Dame football will eventually Join the Big Ten. After all, the Irish are in the middle of B1G country. Their two biggest rivals in the state are both members of that conference. Their two biggest historical rivals in Michigan and USC are also both conference members.

That’s why Notre Dame is always present in the Big Ten when it comes to conference expansion. The latest trend, however, has a slight twist.

This time Greg Swaim thinks that the Big Ten will pursue Notre Dame football, but they will look for an SEC school to join them. The conference specifically wants a team from Texas, but it’s not the Longhorns.

“Why do both the B1G and NotreDame want TAMU as their second team for the future? Because both the B10 and the Irish want to go to Texas… it’s that simple,” Swaim wrote on X.

This isn’t the first time Swaim has claimed the Big Ten wants to move to Texas. He previously said they would make their first moves in the area in the 2026-2027 academic year. However, he is more specific, saying Notre Dame and Texas A&M will move to the B1G.

“Which two teams will be next to join the #B1G and make it to the Big 20?” Swaim added. “Our great source in Chicago tells us he’s heard it will most likely be Notre Dame (who have a permanent invite) and TAMU, since the B1G wants to go to Texas and the Aggies are very unhappy about the Longhorns being added (got it?),” Swaim said in advance before saying, “He reiterates that there will be no invites for non-AAU member teams, so he doesn’t think FSU or Clemson will get invites.”

It’s worth noting that the radio host doesn’t know exactly when these changes might happen at this point, but it does suggest that Notre Dame football and Texas A&M could be members of the Big Ten by this time next season.
