Missouri’s Democratic Party hopes to break the Republican supermajority by participating in the DNC

JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri (WGEM) — Missouri Democratic delegates are in Chicago this week to formally nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s presidential nominee.

All of Missouri’s Democratic delegates officially cast their votes for Harris in a virtual conference earlier this month and reaffirmed their endorsement at the Democratic National Conference this week.

A SoCal Strategies poll of registered and likely voters shows Harris with a small lead over former President Donald Trump. But any Democratic candidate faces a tough challenge in Missouri, where Republicans hold an overwhelming majority.

The November election is expected to be influential, with both key seats and controversial issues on the ballot, and the Missouri Democratic Party hopes to use that to its advantage.

“It is my firm intention to win both the upper and lower polling places,” said Yvonne Reeves-Chong, a Democratic delegate currently attending the DNC in Chicago.

Despite these challenges, Reeves-Chong expects to break the Republican two-thirds majority in Missouri this election cycle.

“For me, it’s a success to talk to my neighbors, to share my values, to share our stories and our messages, to talk to people and reconnect them with these fundamental American values,” Reeves-Chong said. “That’s my success.”

With major issues like abortion on the ballot in Missouri, Democrats are hoping to attract more voters than usual in November’s election. Reeves-Chong believes that hot-button issues could actually bring Missourians together, regardless of party ideology.
