John Legend will perform “Prince Medley” to introduce Tim Walz at the DNC

John Legend will honor Minnesota, the home state of vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, by performing a medley of Prince songs at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night, the news was first reported by Rolling Stone and the Minnesota Star Tribune.

The music that might accompany Walz’s speech Wednesday night at the DNC meeting in Chicago has generated a lot of interest, given what a music fan the Minnesota governor has come to discover the world is. Some supporters even tweeted their wish lists of classic rock or Minnesota-related artists they hoped Walz would perform… but a Replacements reunion is unlikely.

Legend already has experience with Prince covers and sang “Nothing Compares 2 U” as part of a Prince tribute at the 2020 Grammys.

In addition, CNN exclusively reported on Wednesday that Pink will perform Thursday night, shortly before presidential candidate Kamala Harris takes the stage.

The first two nights of the convention featured a number of music stars, including Jason Isbell and Mickey Guyton on Monday night and Patti LaBelle and Common on Tuesday. James Taylor was supposed to have made the most prominent appearance on Monday, singing “You’ve Got a Friend” as an introduction to his friend Joe Biden’s speech, but that performance was cut due to time constraints when the program was well over an hour long.

Music also played a big role on Tuesday night: DJ Cassidy played a playlist of songs associated with the different states while they participated in the traditional roll call. The highlight was a short live performance by Lil Jon between the otherwise recorded segments.
