Big Ten Network calls Michigan football QB contest a ‘twiddler’

Although we continue to hear positive reports about Alex Orji and his efforts to become Michigan’s starting quarterback, the Big Ten Network on Tuesday called it a “race between two horses” between Orji and Davis Warren.

“I think we can tell you it’s not going to be Jack Tuttle, at least not for now,” said Dave Revsine of Big Ten Network during the network’s training camp in Michigan. “He’s working on his recovery from an injury. So it’s a two-way battle for quarterback. Obviously, it’s very exciting to see how that plays out.”

It’s clear that Orji and Warren are different types of quarterbacks. Warren stood out in the spring game and is the more accurate passer. However, Orji has worked hard on that part of his game as well and that’s why he was reportedly the starting QB in the first two practice games.

“I’ve seen two quarterbacks with different skill sets, and I think that’s the main problem,” said former Indiana head coach Gerry DiNardo said. “When you build an offense around Warren, when you build one around Orji, when you try to get them involved. The other issue, unusual for Michigan, is that two of the first four games are Texas and USC, so there’s some sense of urgency to get the quarterback situation sorted out.”

Howard Griffith, another longtime Big Ten Network analyst and Super Bowl winner with the Broncos, also commented and is pleased with Orji’s contribution to the Michigan football team’s offense.

“I like what Orji brings,” Griffith said. “I think if you want to be a more run-dominant team, you have to look at that offensive line. I think they’re going to be right back where they should be, which is a dominant O-line. So I think a quarterback that gives you that mobility is going to give you a chance against teams like that. Does he need to continue to develop as a passer? There’s no doubt about that. But I want him on the field so he can continue to gain experience.”

I agree with Griffith. Orji brings a more run-oriented approach to this team, and that’s what Michigan football is all about anyway. He needs to be able to move the chains on third downs and get the ball to Michigan’s playmakers.

But if you can grow over time, like Jalen Milroe did for Alabama, that’s the best way for the Michigan football team to reach its maximum in the 2024 season.
