DC gym stirs controversy with decision to install cameras in men’s locker room

A new security measure involving cameras in the locker rooms of a local gym chain is raising concerns among members.

An email shared with FOX 5 by a Vida Fitness member on Tuesday reads: “LC Locker Room Cameras: Some of you have noticed the presence of new cameras in the changing and sink area of the men’s locker room. While they are not fully installed yet, it is our plan to increase visibility in these areas for safety reasons.”

The email further assures members that “surveillance of these special areas will be discreet and only accessible to trained surveillance technicians. When the camera installation is almost complete, I will send all members a detailed message about the project.”

The email does not address what safety concerns led to the change, why cameras are being installed in the men’s locker rooms, and whether this will happen at one or multiple locations.

A member of the U Street branch said he received the email, while a man who visited the Logan Circle branch on Tuesday said he noticed the cameras.

“I don’t come to this place that often. My regular spot is at the Navy Yard. I’m not sure if it’s the same there. I haven’t noticed it, but here… I’m not a fan of cameras in the men’s locker room,” said Ernest Shepard. “People can take advantage of it. It doesn’t make me feel any safer from theft or anything like that. I’d rather not have them there and I try to protect my stuff as best I can.”

Alex Duval has been a member for a few months and said he doesn’t use the locker rooms because he lives so close to Logan Circle.

“It doesn’t bother me too much because I don’t really change clothes there. I live nearby, but I can understand that it upsets some people,” Duval said.

FOX 5 reached out to Vida Fitness multiple times on Tuesday seeking clarification on the project and comment on the concerns, but we have not received a response as of this writing.
