Mark Zuckerberg commissioning artist Daniel Arsham to create a 7-foot statue of his wife Priscilla for their garden wasn’t what we predicted would happen in 2024, but here we are. The Facebook CEO is making headlines for “reviving the Roman tradition of creating sculptures of his wife” with a viral Instagram post showing Priscilla next to her metal likeness.
The work depicts Priscilla in oxidized copper paint, standing majestically on a flowing, almost liquid-looking base. A silver shroud is draped over the statue, reaching back like wings. Although Zuckerberg’s take on garden art is unique to say the least, it is not new. There is a long tradition of using sculpture and art to create a focal point and add interest to a garden. In fact, according to experts, it is one of the easiest ways to transform your outdoor space into a design-forward sanctuary.
“Using sculptures, statues, antiques and artwork in the garden is a great way to enhance your space,” says Thom Rutter, master gardener and Gardens Content Editor at Houses & GardensHe continues, “While you may not have the funds to commission a work as a tribute to a loved one, as Mark Zuckerberg did, you can look for smaller vintage pieces at flea markets or second-hand shops. This is a great way to transform your outdoor space and create a focal point that will be a conversation starter for your visitors.”
This look isn’t just limited to the backyard; it can also be an excellent addition to your garden idea. Rutter explains, “While it’s important to mount any piece of art or sculpture on a solid foundation, there’s no reason you can’t do this in the middle of a flower bed or garden border as well.” It works just as well in the grass as it does among the flowers.
Designing a garden statue is all about blending the artwork seamlessly into the landscape. “Surrounding a sculpture with greenery, such as evergreen ground covers, is a clever way to blend the piece into its surroundings. For example, by wrapping ivy around your sculpture, you can create a historic, old-fashioned aesthetic. Ivy is available at Walmart, for example.”
“Even in a small space, you can transform your outdoor area by placing statues or sundials among the plants and embedding them between perennials and shrubs,” Rutter concludes.
