Salinas Big Lots store is one of over 300 stores slated for closure

Big Lots is closing up to 315 stores nationwide, and Salina is on the list of closed locations.

According to a banner on the local store information page on the discount retailer’s website, the store at 2450 S. Ninth St. will close soon, but no specific date was given.

Additionally, an email was sent to customers at the local store informing them that discounts of up to 20% would be available storewide and that store equipment would also be for sale.

Why are Big Lots stores closing across the country?

According to a USA Today report, the company filed a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on July 31, saying it could close up to 315 stores. In an earlier filing, it had announced the closure of 35 to 40 stores.

According to the report, the filing outlined the updated credit terms for the retailer, which, in addition to the contract closure, also included a reduction in the credit limit and an increase in the loan interest rate.

“In 2024, the U.S. economy will continue to face macroeconomic challenges such as increased inflation, which has negatively impacted the purchasing power of our customers,” Big Lots said in the statement.

The company had previously reported that revenue in the first quarter of 2024 fell more than 10% year-on-year.
