I thought I had a tiny kitchen in my old apartment – I never imagined it could get much smaller. Unfortunately, the kitchen in my new studio proved me wrong. It only fits one person at a time, and you don’t even have to move to reach the sink, stove, or fridge (all of which are just three feet apart). Don’t get me wrong – I’m doing OK, but I’ve had to make some sacrifices. One of the biggest? Not having a large trash can.
How do you actually get by without a large trash can? One answer is frequent trips to take out the trash. Another is a hanging trash can. I don’t know what I would do without SONGMICS’ version, which couldn’t be more perfect for my cramped kitchen. It takes up no space, is surprisingly spacious, and looks absolutely chic. Whether you’re in a similar situation to me or not, here’s why I think it can make any kitchen more functional.

What is the SONGMICS hanging trash can?
This trash can is about 13 inches tall, 10 inches wide, and 6 inches deep, with a capacity of just over 2.5 gallons. It’s made from rust-resistant and durable stainless steel that’s also thankfully easy to clean. The lid flips up or out to reveal an inner bin that you can remove and empty. When closed, it traps odors and keeps things smelling fresh. You can hang it on the inside or outside of a cabinet door as long as it’s up to 1 inch thick. The bin also comes with an adhesive hook in case you don’t want to worry about renter-friendliness. I chose the white color to match my appliances, but there are also stainless steel, black, and peach options.
Why I love the SONGMICS hanging trash can
This trash can is a game changer for any size kitchen. It forces me to empty my trash quickly, which is great for leftovers and other things that need to be thrown out sooner rather than later. It also doesn’t wobble when I close my cabinet door. Speaking of which, I had to mount it on the outside of the door instead of the inside (be sure to measure your cabinet depth first!), but I don’t mind. I use it so much anyway that it’s more efficient where it sits; plus, it’s barely noticeable from where it fits in my cabinets. So far, I haven’t noticed any odors under the lid, which flips up and down with ease. The 7-liter bag stays securely in the inner bin and holds more than I thought it would, getting me a few days before I have to take it out.
Even if I move into an apartment with a larger kitchen, I take this gem with me; it is simply So much more convenient. Trust me – you won’t know how you managed without it either!
