Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody is among nearly two dozen attorneys general demanding answers from online retailer Temu regarding recent troubling reports, according to a press release from Moody.
Moody and 20 other state attorneys general sent a letter on Thursday to Temu’s president and the CEO of PPD Holdings Inc., Temu’s parent company, outlining their concerns about business practices after reports emerged that Temu may be violating federal or state consumer protection laws, the release said.
In particular, they question the company’s possible links to the Chinese Communist Party, its data collection and sharing practices, and possible violations of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act.
“A congressional investigation has found that Temu may be illegally selling products made using forced labor in an area of China where the Chinese Communist Party is committing genocide,” Moody said. “In addition, there are reports that Temu is collecting information on U.S. consumers and sharing it with the CCP.”
The attorneys general sent Temu a list of questions and gave them 30 days to respond.
“These reports are alarming – not only from a consumer protection perspective, but also from a national security perspective,” said Attorney General Moody. “I and my fellow attorneys general urge the company’s owners to respond to these allegations.”
According to a press release from Moody’s on Friday, the company acknowledged that it “does not have a policy prohibiting the sale of goods from Xinjiang – the site where the CCP is committing genocide against the Uighurs.” The Moody’s press release also states that Temu claims it is not subject to the UFLPA.
