3 Spurs players who can’t afford to make mistakes in Popovich’s rotation this season

Excellent defense, strong drive, great instincts and a team player. These qualities can describe Tre Jones’ abilities in the NBA. The former Duke Blue Devil has been a member of the Spurs since 2020 and has brought a lot of good things to this team.

Currently, the point guard position is quite crowded, which could make it difficult for Jones to find a role this season. Chris Paul is in town to take the reins of the offense, and freshman Stephon Castle is reportedly being groomed as the team’s future point guard. Depending on where Castle starts at the beginning of the year, Jones could be the third point guard in the rankings.

Jones is undersized and limited in some areas, making him a non-factor at shooting guard. Therefore, the point guard position is the only position Jones could play, and it could be difficult for him to get regular playing time.

Jones played 28 minutes per game last season, but his playing time is expected to decrease due to his environment. Therefore, Jones will need to show fearlessness on both ends of the court in the few minutes he gets. Jones seems to be the perfect Spurs type of player and he does the little things to win games. However, it appears that San Antonio is moving toward a backcourt that will improve Wembanyama’s game and Jones may not be able to do that.

Jones has the potential to be a real firecracker for the team as a substitute, and if he makes few mistakes, he could be part of the rotation that plays every game. That seems like a difficult task with the team in this position, so Jones needs to make the most of his opportunity. Either way you look at it, he’ll be an unrestricted free agent next summer, but it could be Jones’ last year in the Alamo City.
