Rat droppings everywhere. Pests eating into food. Charleston area restaurants with worst inspections in July

South Carolina health inspectors found numerous violations at Charleston-area restaurants in July, from rat droppings found throughout a restaurant to rodents eating stored food to large numbers of flies. The state regularly releases ratings and inspection reports for food establishments in the Charleston area.

Here are the restaurants that received some of the worst reviews in July.

Charleston Sports Pub at 1989 Maybank Hwy in Charleston

The Charleston Sports Pub was inspected on July 25 and received a grade of C.

An inspector noticed liquid dripping onto food in the freezer. Additionally, three containers of cooked chicken wings without date markings were discovered.

Raw meat, black beans, cheese slices, rice and sugar were stored uncovered. Food containers looked and felt dirty. Organic residue was found on the bar jet holder and the rim of the ice bucket.

Pint glasses were stored face down on a discolored cloth. Black discoloration was visible on cutting boards. Grease buildup was visible on equipment in the cooking line.

The restaurant underwent a required follow-up inspection on July 29 and received an A grade.

Saveurs du Monde Café at 22 Westedge in Charleston

The Saveurs du Monde Café was inspected on July 18 and received a grade of “C”.

An inspector discovered cereal, powdered sugar and grain packages with rodent bite holes. Flies were also observed around the bar.

Loose food items were found in roll-top bins that contained other food items that had fallen in because the bins were not properly closed or covered, and food items were also seen stored on the floor.

An accumulation of organic material was detected in the ice machine.

On July 22, the restaurant was re-inspected and again received a grade of C.

Taco Boy at 106 E Ashley Ave. in Folly Beach

Taco Boy was inspected on July 23 and received a grade of C.

An inspector discovered organic material on the can opener blade and in the ice cream maker. Loose food and a pot of queso were also discovered on the floor.

Certain foods were not kept at the correct temperatures. Clean dishes were stored in dirty containers. Glasses were stored face down on a corroded shelf.

The restaurant underwent a required follow-up inspection on July 26 and received an A grade.

Long Island Cafe at 1515 Palm Blvd. in Isle of Palms

The Long Island Café was inspected on July 22 and received a B grade.

An inspector found a large number of flies in the kitchen.

One employee was observed touching his hair and then not washing his hands before serving plates of food. A server was observed eating in the kitchen.

Organic substances were found in the ice machine. Accumulations of organic substances were found in the drinks machine at the bar.

The restaurant underwent a required follow-up inspection on July 29 and received an A grade.

Sunset dining on the water at 97 Ronnie Boats Blvd. in Mount Pleasant

Sunsets Waterfront Dining was inspected on July 24 and received a grade of B.

An inspector discovered rodent droppings in the dry storage room, under a sink and on a shelf in the kitchenette. Houseflies were also observed in the facility.

Organic deposits were found in three ice machines. Rust deposits were found on the side of the frying pans that comes into contact with food.

The restaurant underwent a required follow-up inspection on July 29 and received an A grade.
