Anderson University, founded in 1911, is reporting the highest enrollment numbers in its history for the fall semester.
According to official figures, 820 freshmen and 133 transfer students make up the majority of them; more than half of the students live on campus. All freshmen and sophomores live on campus.
Anderson University volunteers and staff helped bring over 2,700 students to campus on Friday, bringing the total number of students enrolled to 4,520.
While some students involved in sports or leadership positions arrive earlier, many students from campus housing arrived on Friday and were greeted by volunteers who helped them unload and carry their belongings to their dorm rooms.
The first day of school is Wednesday, August 21st.
Volunteers also helped with traffic control.
Staff member Rick Smythe showed parents and a student with a car full of belongings the way, waving his arm like a military pilot waving at a plane landing on a naval ship.
Alex Anderson, a freshman from Atlanta, was in her dorm room after several members of her football team helped her carry all of her bags and boxes at once. “I loved that I really didn’t have to move anything, they got everyone’s stuff out and my family could park,” she said. “It’s really helpful and awesome. Super easy.”
Titus Crisler, a former Westside High player and current linebacker for the Anderson University Trojans first team football team, was happy to help.
“I love helping all these people,” he said. “I still remember my first time. I was terrified. It’s a new experience, a new way of life, freedom, so I like to help where I can, especially at AU.”
The Anderson University Trojans’ first home game will be on September 7th at 1 p.m.
Ada Klair, a freshman from Madison, Georgia, was excited to visit campus. “It’s really beautiful,” she said.
Her mother, Alisha Klair, agreed. “It was a great group, very nice,” she said. “There were so many activities. It’s great to socialize and start building relationships before the first day of school.”
