Robb Report’s Wine Club offers three great Cabernet Sauvignons from Napa Valley

Robb Report’s Wine Club offers three great Cabernet Sauvignons from Napa Valley

Fans of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, make room in your wine fridges. The latest shipment from the Robb Report 672 Napa Valley Wine Club includes a trio of Cabs from America’s most famous wine region. While the club’s offerings have lately included red wine blends, Syrah, Malbec and Merlot in addition to bottles of Cab, this quarter’s stars align and all three selections consist of the queen of red grapes. Club director Dave Shefferman says that while it was pure coincidence this time around, it wasn’t entirely unexpected. “We do try to mix it up with blends and other varieties, but by definition Napa Valley is Cabernet-heavy,” Shefferman told us. “That said, we thought this quarter’s shipment was a nice mix of three distinct regions: One from Atlas Peak, one from Oakville—one of the most respected appellations in Napa Valley—and one from Napa Valley as a whole.”

Members already know that the club regularly replenishes its stocks of rare Cabernet Sauvignon, blends and interesting single-varietal reds from Napa. Named for the number of bottles a standard pallet of wine holds, Club 672 supplies its members exclusively with Napa Valley red wine. All are produced in very small batches, usually just a few barrels, and they are prime examples of the valley’s best single vineyards or blends from Napa’s best vineyards. Having expanded his network of winemakers and winery owners throughout his career, Shefferman seeks out small-batch offerings that are usually only sold to private club members at the winery.

“Our process starts with the search,” he says. “Our team is on the road regularly, meeting with producers, attending industry events and tasting wines.” Unlike many wine clubs, where individual buyers make the purchasing decision, Shefferman evaluates the outstanding wines together with a panel of winemakers, sommeliers and WSET-certified professionals who blind taste the entries together and unbiasedly select the very best.

Each quarter begins with hundreds of wines, and when the selection is narrowed down to fewer than 20, we taste the wines and help Shefferman select the final three, which are shipped to club members, who receive two bottles of each—one to enjoy immediately and one to save for later. Each six-pack, assembled four times a year, costs between $550 and $650 including shipping, averaging about $100 per bottle. Considering the price of many Napa Cabs, this is an amazing deal on hard-to-find, limited-quantity Napa reds. (To be completely frank, we also write the tasting cards that accompany each shipment and the producer profiles that are emailed, but we receive no additional compensation from the wine club.)

Here are the three wines included in the upcoming shipment of the Robb Report 672 Napa Valley Wine Club.

Stringer Cellars 2021 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Stringer Cellars 2021 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

String cellar

Composed of 96 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 4 percent Petit Verdot, this wine is a true cross-section of Napa Valley. Grapes come from three valley vineyards in Calistoga, Oakville and Yountville, as well as three high-elevation sites on Howell Mountain, Atlas Peak and Pritchard Hill. After being hand-picked, the grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks and 75 percent new oak barrels, aged separately before blending, and then combined and aged for an additional six months. Stringer Cellars 2021 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is deep ruby in the glass and has aromas of lavender, violet, red plum and raspberry. Polished tannins and mild acidity envelop flavors of cassis, black plum, raspberry, nutmeg and fennel pollen that dissolve into a smooth finish.

Acumen Wines 2021 Peak Cabernet Sauvignon Atlas Peak

Ingenious wines

Coming from two different vineyards just half a mile apart, this wine combines the best of both worlds. The intensity of one is balanced by the more graceful characteristics of the other; a tiny amount of Merlot is mixed in for balance. Acumen Wines 2021 Peak Cabernet Sauvignon Atlas Peak is dark garnet to the eye. It has a nose of red plum, cherry cola, sage and thyme. Aromas of black cherry, raspberry, cherry pipe tobacco, anise and dark chocolate are embedded in bold tannins that gently coat the tongue and gums before disappearing.

Stanton Vineyards 2019 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon

Stanton Vineyards 2019 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon

Stanton Vineyards

In the heart of the Oakville appellation, the Stanton family has been farming their vineyard since 1947, acquiring it in 1952. Over the years they’ve sold grapes to the likes of Newton, Phelps, Far Niente and Groth, but the taste of this wine suggests they keep the best fruit for themselves. Stanton Vineyards 2019 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of cassis, cedar and mocha. It has an inky garnet color with a purple rim and aromas of red plum, red currant, blackberry, milk chocolate, clove and violet. Silky tannins and a burst of bright acidity on the finish make for a beautiful finish.
