The Big 12 Conference was founded in 1994 and began conference play in 1996. From the beginning, a Big 12 championship game was played between the winners of the North and South divisions to determine the champion.
From 2010 to 2016, the championship game was suspended because the Big 12 fell below the NCAA-mandated minimum of 12 teams to determine the conference winner in a championship game.
In 2017, the Conference Championship Game returned with a slight change. Instead of the division winners, the two best teams based on conference record now played for the title.
