Audigo wireless microphones make it easy to get flawless sound for TikTok

Imagine a pocket-sized recording studio that connects wireless microphones to your smartphone so you can record high-resolution videos with broadcast-quality stereo sound. Well, imagine no longer. Audigo is here, and it’s probably the first wireless microphone system for the TikTok generation that can deliver professional sound without the need for any specialized knowledge or training.

Each of the small Audigo microphones is a small trapezoidal cube that fits easily in the palm of your hand. There is a power button on the front of the microphone and a USB port on the back. Each microphone also has an LED on the front that indicates the status of the microphone. The system is based on the Audigo Video Mixer app for iOS, which is capable of recording pristine multi-track audio in 24-bit/48kHz quality.

One feature I like is the ability for up to four Audigo users to collaborate remotely on a project, with additional video and audio tracks able to be recorded, mixed, edited and added to a project from anywhere in the world. This is ideal for musicians working remotely.

Each microphone has two condenser microphones and internal memory that can store the recorded audio locally in the microphone’s 32GB storage. When the recording session is finished, the microphones transfer the audio to the iPhone where it can be accessed, edited and distributed. This post-production transfer ensures that there are no dropouts in the audio. Each microphone has a rechargeable battery that lasts about six hours, which is certainly enough to record the longest performances.

The mics do not have a mounting thread to attach them directly to a boom arm or stand, but do come with a magnetic mount that allows them to be attached to any standard boom or mic stand. The magnetic system works well and it is so quick and easy to move mics around, especially if you buy some spare mounts.

The sound of the microphones can be customized in the Audigo app by adjusting the equalizer and adding reverb for vocals, guitars, or anything else that needs more sound. You can monitor the sound with wired or Bluetooth headphones to do a sound check. Videos are also recorded in the app and automatically synced with the sound of the microphones to ensure perfect matching. Audio files can be WAV and M4A files, while videos are saved as MOV files.

Up to four Audigo microphones can be used simultaneously, so that with correct microphone placement, excellent sound recordings are possible, especially when recording music. But the device is also ideal for podcasts, meetings or even lectures.

The audio transmission technology is a combination of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The signal is extremely stable and there were no dropouts during my tests. I would say the quality is comparable to the excellent RØDE Wireless Pro.

The Audigo system shines in its flexibility. The microphones are small enough to hide almost anywhere, but with the flexibility to place up to four microphones in a single shot, you can close mic things like drums or woodwinds and then record all four streams separately, which can be edited in post. For example, the gain of each stream can be adjusted, an equalizer applied, reverb added, and even panned to create a great soundstage.

In practice, the Audigo system allows you to balance the audio for an iPhone video in a way that is almost impossible with any other setup, unless you have a full-fledged audio mixer and multiple XLR microphones.

The Audigo system makes it much easier to produce truly professional sound for social media content. Normally, you might use the smartphone’s microphone, but the sound would be distant and muddy, without individual instruments or voices being heard and balanced.

Setting up and using the Audigo microphones is easy. Simply turn the microphones on and link them to the Audigo app when you first use them. Then simply place the microphones and maybe do a few sound checks to see how everything goes. The placement of the microphones can make all the difference.

It’s important to remember that some of the best audio recordings in my opinion are Blue Note jazz recordings from the 1950s and 1960s. These recordings were made by a sound engineer named Rudi Van Gelder who was a master of microphone placement. This was at a time when there were no sophisticated mixing consoles to get the best sound. You just placed the microphones very carefully. The tiny size of the Audigo microphones makes this so easy and it is possible to produce some incredible recordings with this amazing little system.

The Audigo system is free to use after purchasing the microphones, but you can also subscribe to the Studio version of the service, which offers 100GB of cloud storage and a very clever compression feature. However, everything you need to use Audigo is already available in the basic version, so you don’t need to take out another subscription, which is a huge relief.

Verdict: The Audigo wireless microphone system is unique in the way it works. The closest comparisons would be RØDE’s Wireless Pro with the RØDE Capture app or Shure’s MOTIV system. However, the way the Audigo system works and the ability to edit with video is excellent. The collaboration feature is excellent and provides an easy way to produce a music video with remote collaborators. The sound quality with well-positioned and mixed microphones turns an average video into a brilliant piece of creative content. So many videos fail due to poor audio quality. Audigo could change all that and I’m excited to see what content creators do with it.

Prices and availability: Audigo’s wireless microphone system is available now and costs $249 per microphone. Two microphones cost $473, three microphones cost $697, and a maximum of four microphones costs $896.
