If you were shocked by the revelations in NetflixIf you watch the hit documentary “Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal,” it’s safe to say you’ll have as many questions as answers.

In 2015, the world shook the Data leak at Ashley Madison – a dating site for married people looking for an affair – where millions of users and their personal information were exposed.

The new three-part Netflix documentary features former employees, affected couples and journalists who were at the centre of the controversy. Here’s everything you need to know about the true story behind the documentary…

Ashley Madison was hacked in 2015 by an anonymous party calling itself “The Impact Team.”

They demanded that the company cease operations within 30 days, otherwise the data would be shared.

According to Impact Group, the site’s misleading “complete deletion” feature was criticized. This offered the option to completely remove personal information from the site for a fee of $19. However, according to documentation, this fee was not honored.

“Full Delete generated $1.7 million in revenue for (parent company Avid Life Media) in 2014. This is also a complete lie,” the group said in a statement. shared by security blogger Brian Krebs.

“Users almost always pay by credit card; their purchase details are not deleted as promised. This includes their real name and address, which are of course the most important information for users to have deleted.”

But the Impact Group also apparently disagreed with the site on moral grounds, adding: “Too bad for these men, they are cheating scumbags and don’t deserve such discretion.”
The data included, among other things, names, addresses, sexual fantasies listed in users’ profiles, amounts spent on the site, and credit card information.

Who was affected by the data leak?

In addition to millions of regular users, a number of prominent names also appeared in the leak.

The Netflix documentary tells the story of Christian family vloggers Sam and Nia Rader, a married couple who had to deal with the fallout from the scandal in the public eye after it was revealed that Sam once had an account.

As we see in the documentary, Sam claimed he used the site during a lull in his and Nia’s relationship before they were able to build an online following. However, his name blew up after the couple built a large viewership on their YouTube channel.

In the documentary, he also admitted to having been unfaithful in the past, although he had initially publicly claimed the opposite.

The scandal also affected many other prominent relationships that were not mentioned in the documentary.

Jeff Ashton, Attorney General of Florida, said he was merely “curious” about the site after he was mentioned by name in the leak, but denied having met anyone there or ever having had an affair. He also apologized for the “great stress and distress” his association with the site had caused his wife and children.

19 children and counting star Josh Duggar was also named in the hack, and although he did not directly address the Ashley Madison controversy, he said he was “the greatest hypocrite of all time” because he “stood up for his faith and family values” while simultaneously viewing pornography and being unfaithful to his wife. He is currently is serving a 12-year prison sentence for possession of child pornography after found guilty in 2021.

Jason Doré, then executive director of the Louisiana Republican Party, was also named in the leak. However, he said the New Orleans Times-Picayune (per Politico) that he only uses Ashley Madison for “Opposition Research”He was later hired by the Trump administration in 2017.

It is also worth noting that Ashley Madison’s sign-up process no email verification requiredwhich means it’s possible that many of the customers mentioned in the leak may not have signed up themselves.

Who was actually responsible for the Ashley Madison hack?

A group calling itself The Impact Team claimed responsibility for the hack – but To this day we do not know the identity of those behind it

Even cyber experts brought in by Ashley Madison and interviewed in the document could not find any concrete clues as to who the perpetrator(s) might be.

The documentary also deals with the (as yet unverifiable) theory that it is even carried out by a single person as part of an inside job.

Back in 2015, Avid Life Media CEO Noel Biderman told a security bloggerBrian Krebs: “In any case, this was a person who was not an employee, but who certainly came into contact with our technical services.”

AreAre Sam and Nia Rader still together?

YouTubers Sam and Nia are the central couple rocked by scandal in the documentary – and they are actually still together. In addition, their YouTube channel – which documents their family life – is very successful with 2.52 million subscribers. They have also posted numerous videos about their appearances on the show.

Sam and Nia now have four children, and even renewed their wedding vowswhich they documented in a recent video. Since then, they have spoken about the show in further interviews, with Nia telling “Tudum” by Netflix that she believes that “marriages can be saved” and that “it is worth fighting to save marriage.”

In another interview with the Daily MailSam said: “We didn’t have a lot of nice people. Some people think I don’t deserve Nia and she shouldn’t be with me now.

“But we have a happy marriage full of real, deep intimacy that we lacked in the beginning. We know each other inside out and when that’s there, the intimacy is unmatched.”

Is Noel Biderman still married?

Former CEO of Avid Life Media and father of two, Noel Biderman, was eventually exposed as a user of the site himself when a second, even larger set of data was leaked. His personal emails were also shared, revealing that he was allegedly seeking young escorts. He eventually resigned as CEO of Ashley Madison’s parent company eight days later.

Throughout the documentary Amanda defended the site and appeared in interviews alongside her husband. And it appears that Noel is still married to Amanda. At the end of the 2023 Hulu documentary “The Ashley Madison Affair,” Noel’s attorney said in a statement, “Mr. Biderman is – and was – a dedicated husband and father.”

“Mr. Biderman was also a victim of a crime, just like the Ashley Madison customers whose public information was hacked and published,” it continued.

“Although Mr. Biderman understands the differences between himself and these clients, he – like many of them – has spent the past few years trying to move on and repair the damage in his life and relationships. He is grateful that his wife, Amanda, has stood by him throughout.”

Accordingly ForbesNoel is currently CEO of Toronto-based software company Avenue Insights.

Does Ashley Madison still exist?

Yes, the dating site is still active today. Less than a month after the hacks, Ashley Madison owner Avid Life Media claimed in a statement that there have been “hundreds of thousands” of new registrations since then.

Not only that, but Ashley Madison’s Chief Strategy Officer Paul Keable said this month Fox News that the site’s membership has increased since the release of the new documentation and that the site currently has approximately 85 million users.

“We know what it looks and feels like when we let our members down, and we are committed to ensuring it never happens again,” he said.
