SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — The internal review of Tijuana Mayor Montserrat Caballero’s ouster from the Morena party says it is complete, but party leaders in the state of Baja California say the process is far from over.

Caballero has been in dispute with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s ruling Morena party since it rejected her re-election.

Morena chose another candidate who eventually won the election in July.

Caballero stresses that she has always remained loyal to the party despite the decision not to support it.

But Morena leaders in Baja say she acted behind the scenes to help a candidate from another party.

Last month, the Morena party launched an investigation to determine whether there was sufficient evidence of insubordination.

“I was subpoenaed to see evidence against me, but no convincing evidence was presented,” Caballero said. “This process is over, I was never part of any formal investigation against me, it’s over.”

At a meeting with journalists earlier this week, she also criticized the party leadership and said there had never been any concrete evidence against Morena.

But Catalino Zavala Márquez, president of the Morena party in Baja, said the investigation was still ongoing.

“The process is being led by Morena’s National Commission,” said Zavala Márquez. “In due course, it will make official announcements on the progress of the investigation,”

He said it would probably take two to three months before a decision was made.

“She is being investigated because she allegedly violated the party rights of others and because she does not support and respect her party colleagues.”
