SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — Imagine being able to take a stunning piece of art straight off the gallery wall and keep it forever. At the South County Art Association’s 19th annual Great Art Heist, that dream can become a reality.
Each year, local artists donate original artwork to be exhibited at the South County Art Association (SCAA) for a month before being “stolen” – that is, taken home – on the night of the robbery.
During the heist, the names of ticket holders will be drawn at random by host Stephen Palmer to determine the order of the “thieves.” Anyone who wants to take part in this special “crime” can view the works on display in the gallery from today and online from August 22.
Jason Fong, South County Art Association exhibition director, said each attendee goes home with a one-of-a-kind work of art – meaning they go home with an original piece worth far more than the price of admission. The fun evening is the SCAA’s premier fundraiser and has become one of its most eagerly anticipated events.
“It’s fun to talk to people when they’re looking at the exhibition because they’re not just looking, they’re looking for something they’d like to take home. I think it makes people think more deeply about what kind of work moves them,” Fong said. “Ultimately, the art will find its way into people’s homes where it will continue to be appreciated.”
Fong said the event helps further the organization’s mission to achieve greater public participation in the arts in the Rhode Island community.
“This allows us to raise funds for the SCAA to continue our program and maintain our historic buildings that need constant attention,” Fong said. “The entire process revolves around art from local artists. We wouldn’t be able to do this without their generous donations.”
