2024 CBCA Book of the Year Winner Announced

The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has announced the winners of the Book of the Year Awards 2024.

This year, the CBCA Shadow Jury winners were announced simultaneously. In the third year of the Shadow Jury process, over 240 school children’s groups will vote on their winners from the shortlisted books.

Selected from 656 entries, the winners, honorary books and shadow jury winners in each category are:

Book of the Year: Older Readers

  • Grace notes (Karen Comer, Lothian)

Honor books

  • A hunger of thorns (Lili Wilkinson, A&U Children)
  • Let’s never talk about it again (Megan Williams, lyrics)

Shadow assessment

  • Inkflower (Suzy Zail, Walker Books)

Book of the Year: Younger Readers

  • Scar City (Tristan Bancks, Puffin)

Honor books

  • Huda was here (H Hayek, A&U Children)
  • Real pigeons flutter (Andrew McDonald, illustration by Ben Wood, HGCP)

Shadow assessment

  • Scar City (Tristan Bancks, Puffin)

Book of the Year: Early Childhood

  • Fantastic gymnastics! (Briony Stewart, Lothian)

Honor books

  • Bear and duck are friends (Sue deGennaro, The Little Rabbit)
  • Grace and Mr Milligan (Caz Goodwin, illustrations by Pip Kruger, Marshall Cavendish)

Shadow assessment

  • The Concrete Garden (Bob Graham, Walker Books)

Picture book of the year

  • Timeless (Kelly Canby, Fremantle Press)

Honor books

  • Paper flower girl (Mateja Jager, written by Margrete Lamond, WestWords)
  • This bird has arms (Ronojoy Ghosh & Niharika Hukku, written by Kate Temple & Jol Temple, HGCP)

Shadow assessment

  • Every night at midnight (Peter Cheong, Affirm)

Eve Pownall Prize

  • Country town (Isolde Martyn & Robyn Ridgeway, illustration by Louise Hogan, Ford Street)

Honor books

  • Australia: Land of Colours (Jess Racklyeft, Confirm)
  • Our country: Where history happened (Mark Greenwood, illustration by Frané Lessac, Walker Books)

CBCA award for new illustrator

  • Hope is the most important thing (Erica Wagner, written by Johanna Bell, A&U Children’s).
