A new shop for pop culture fans, made by a pop culture fan, is preparing to open its doors in Over-the-Rhine.
Pop Cultur’d Co. is a pop culture merchandise and gift shop owned by Northern Kentucky University graduate Livia Ganshirt, who started her business during the pandemic by making merchandise for her online boutique. Ganshirt will open her first brick-and-mortar location at 6 W. 12th St. this September.
Ganshirt says that after graduating, she noticed there weren’t enough outlets for “fan merch” – merchandise or goods sold to fans of specific bands, movies, TV shows, etc. She started making her own fan merchandise and selling it online, and business took off.
“I just didn’t see a lot of fan merch – and what was available wasn’t cute,” Ganshirt said in a press release. “So I started making my own. What I do is ‘by a fan, for a fan,’ and based on my own style and preferences, I feel like I have a good sense of what people are looking for.”
Ganshirt makes t-shirts and sweatshirts using sublimation, ink dyeing and embroidery. Their collection ranges from pop stars like Taylor Swift and Harry Styles to iconic TV series like Friends and Gilmore Girls, and they also offer new options based on the changes in pop culture.
In addition to clothing, Pop Cultur’d Co. also offers accessories, decor, stickers, puzzles, wall art, prints, posters and more. The store will have an open concept where customers can watch Ganshirt operate her machines and make shirts.
“This is such a great concept that we are happy to have it here at OTR,” says Lindzie Gunnels,
3CDC’s director of commercial leasing said in the press release, “It really adds to the diversity of retailers in the neighborhood, with a diverse selection of small shops within walking distance of Pop Cultur’d’s new space.”
Ganshirt is hosting a soft opening event on Friday, August 16. Visitors can stop by Pop Cultur’d Co. and check out the space from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The grand opening will be Saturday, September 7, with a permanent jewelry pop-up by Other Perfect Things in the store.
