2024 was a great year for Green Day. This winter they released their 14th studio album savior and reached a top 5 place on the Billboard 200. In February, their groundbreaking pop-punk classic was released Dookie turned 30. And next month her huge success (and Broadway spectacle) American Idiot celebrates its 20th anniversary. For a band that has been making waves since the early 1990s, 2024 is a worthwhile victory lap for Green Day.

On paper, you might think that a band like Green Day and a venue like Wrigley Field wouldn’t be a good fit. But their recent performance at Chicago Cubs’ famous stadium on August 13 proved one thing: With a little talent and rock’n’roll magic, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool can turn any venue on its head. They welcomed the Linda Lindas, Rancid and the Smashing Pumpkins as opening acts before taking the stage themselves and delivering a rousing 37-song performance.

Green Day performed both Dookie And American Idiot in their entirety, the two records with interpretations of “The American Dream is Killing Me” and “Bobby Sox” by savior. And then, of course, Billie Joe returned to the stage one last time to perform an encore of “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).” paste would bet that Green Day’s Wrigley show will remain one of Chicago’s best music nights in 2024.
