CARTERET – The township has received a $5.4 million grant that will be used to upgrade road infrastructure in two areas of the waterfront, the Waterfront Boulevard Extension and the Lighthouse Way Extension.

According to Mayor Daniel J. Reiman, the grant comes from the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s Local Transportation Projects Fund (LTPF).

Reiman said the grant will fund the construction of a new public road connecting the planned Carteret Ferry Terminal to a proposed new intersection along Roosevelt Avenue next to Noes Creek.

The boulevard will include two lanes, bicycling and pedestrian amenities, sidewalks, landscaping, lighting and stormwater management improvements. The roadway will run parallel to the Northern Riverwalk, which is currently under construction, the mayor said.

“The LTPF grant will also fund the connection of Lighthouse Way, which provides access to Waterfront Park, the Municipal Marina and Danielle’s Garden, to Port Carteret Drive and the recently completed Southern Riverwalk,” Reiman said in a statement. “Both road extensions will provide access to future developments within the district’s Waterfront Redevelopment Area, which will include over $1 billion in private development and $100 million in public improvements. In addition to the Carteret Intermodal Transportation Building, this will include office, retail and residential buildings.”

The proposed project will improve the safety of motorists and pedestrians accessing Waterfront Park, ferry service and the future ferry terminal.

“The safety impact of this project becomes even more significant when considering the future development of the site adjacent to the proposed road,” Reiman said. “The community expects that this property will become home to a film studio, hotel, retail space and parking garages in the future. These future additions to the Carteret waterfront will create a multitude of jobs and attract a large number of residents and visitors, which will multiply the positive safety and accessibility impacts of the proposed project.”
