Trees downed by Hurricane Beryl block the right of way of school buses and trucks in northeast Harris County

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Despite concerns from neighbors and school administrators, Action 13 ensured that leaning trees blocking a road were removed.

The huge piles of debris aren’t the only evidence that Hurricane Beryl swept through a northeast Harris County neighborhood. Tall trucks are another sign that high winds affected this road as they brushed against leaning trees along the road.

“It could kill someone, honestly. It really could,” Meghan Kolacmy said. “It’s a big tree.”

Kolacmy has been trying for a month to remove the trees before her children are hurt.

“It looks like it would be nice and fun to climb on, right? But the fact is that it could fall down if someone tries to climb on it,” Kolacmy explained.

She called 311 four times about the two trees that overhang the road in the county’s public street space, but her calls were not answered.

“No email, no voicemail, nothing,” Kolacmy said.

She is not alone.

Sheldon Independent School District officials told ABC13 they also contacted the county twice because the school’s buses could not safely navigate the road.

“I see my neighbor pushing her daughter down the street in a wheelchair and that hurts me as a mother,” Kolacmy said. “It’s unacceptable. I felt like I had to do something.”

The road is in the district of Adrian Garcia, commissioner of Harris County’s Second District. ABC13 has contacted his office.

A spokesman said they did not know exactly why it had taken a month to remove the trees, but they had given the work priority and planned to cut down the trees on Thursday.

Garcia’s office said if you call 311 and are stuck, you should contact the Commissioner’s office directly.

“It’s frustrating too,” Kolacmy said. “As someone who pays his taxes and my husband has been working since he was 16, it’s frustrating that this falls on deaf ears.”
